Understanding Godwin by understanding Krishnamurti.

So, by embracing this ideology, Adikaram has shown, that Four Truths of the Path, i.e. Suffering as the First Truth, then Reasons for Sufferings, Release from Suffering, and Path leading to sufferings, were not understood by him, or more correctly, not applicable to him, hence not understood by him.

Since, Adikaram had a Fragmented mind due to Schizophrenia, there was fear, insecurity, doubt, etc., when he was 'Thinking', which are the things which caused suffering in him. But in Buddhism, which is directed at people who are having 'whole' and complete mind, not defective mind, not Fragmented mind, for them suffering is caused by Anger, Lust, Desire, Ego and Ignorance (ideas and opinions), as they, the Anger, Lust, Desire, Ego and Ignorance (ideas and opinions) have corrupted the minds, and they are as the causes of Sufferings. These Anger, Lust, Desire, Ego and Ignorance (ideas and opinions) were not the causes of Sufferings for Adikaram. So he embraced the Krishnamurti's Teaching.

While rejecting Four Truths of the Path in the Buddhism, Adikaram had claimed that the Krishnamurti's Teaching as the Real Buddhism and he is as the present Buddha. And he further suggested that many of the Sutta's in the Thripitaka was not original teaching of the Lord Buddha, but later addition by monks. How did he knew this?

By all these, Adikaram has insulted the Lord Buddha and the Monks as well.

Using this Krishnamurti ideas of 'Awareness' Adikaram had translated the Dhammapada into English, distorting it, thus insulting Lord Buddha, futher.

Godwin in following Krishnamurti and Adikaram, and teaching that 'thinking' has gaps, and 'thoughts' crops up automatically without a reason, etc., have well indicated that he was suffering from Schizophrenia as well.

Following the steps of Adikaram, Godwin insulted Lord Buddha by distorting the Kalama Sutta, to suit his teaching of meditation. He went further by 'creating' a Sutta and says even Lord Buddha was watching his 'Thoughts' of Lust, Anger, Desire. Ego and Ignorance, without being able to get rid of them, but not getting involved in them, as Godwin was doing, as Godin was suffering from Schizophrenia, and therefore Godwin could not do. So he by insulting the Lord Buddha, tries to bring down the Buddha to Godwin's level.

Godwin's disciple, Upul also claims that 'thoughts' are cropping up or popping up in its own. There is Gaps in between the thinking, he indicates by this, which shows that Upul was and is suffering from Schizophrenia.

All these people who follow Krishnamurti's Teaching, and who are born to Buddhist families have many things in common.

1. They call that the Krishnamurti's Teaching as the Real Buddhism.

2. They distort the Buddhism and interpret the Buddhism in a distorted way to suit their understanding of Krishnamurti.

3. If there are similar portions in Krishnamurti's Teaching with some Sutta, then they accept it as original Buddhism. If there are differences, then they call them as later additions by the monks.

4. Bhavana they totally reject as Krishnamurti and they themselves could not do it due to Schizophrenia.

5. They tend to say things, as which were the words of Lord Buddha, as Godwin did, what they feel is correct, showing much disrespect to the Teaching of the Buddha.

6. They think that the mental state of 'Awareness' is to be the mental action of 'Sati', and therefore think that by being 'Aware' that they are practicing something called Vipassana Bhavana, even which was not in Buddhism.

To understand the Fragmented minds of Godwin, Adikaram and Krishnamurti, one must have a Whole, Complete mind as well as have the experience of Samadi, first to understand one's whole mind.

Understanding Godwin by understanding Krishnamurti.

It is similar to a sick person having a great body pain. He cannot be Aware of the pain and thus distance himself form the pain. His Attention would be drawn to the pain constantly, thus observing the pain, and suffering from it, creating fear, insecurity, doubt, etc., in perpetuation.

I came to understand that many of the people who try to understand Krishnamurti find it is difficult to do so. This is due to them having 'whole', complete mind. So there is no fragmentation in their mind. There are no gaps in their mind, When they 'Think', they feel and know that they are thinking. Thinking as their own actions. And since they think, since it is their thoughts, there is no fear, insecurity, doubt, etc. If they practice Bhavana, they can cognize the Breathing through the Attention, thus stopping the 'Thinking' as well.

But some people who are having Fragmented mind, due to the Gaps in the Mind's function, and therefore have fear, doubt, insecurity, etc., due to 'thinking', easily understand and identify with Krishnamurti. This is the reason why Adikaram, Godwin, etc., embraced the Krishnamurti's Teaching immediately, gratefully, as soon as they have read him.

Adikaram's Rejection of Buddhism.

Most of the people don't know that Adikaram had had rejected Buddhism, and continue to consider him as a Buddhist. Once he had accepted the Krishnamurti's Teaching, he was no more a Buddhist. Even many don't know that Adikaram was following Krishnamurti. The reasons are they themselves don't know what amounts to be a Buddhist or a Non-Buddhist or what amounts to a rejection of the Buddhism.

The central or the core Teaching of Lord Buddha is Four Truths of the Path. The Forth Truth of the Path is the Eight Fold Path to Nibbana. So, it is clear that Buddhism beings with these Truths. There is no need to search for an Unknown Truth, as these Truths are made available and explained in the Buddhism, and these Truths are the Beginning of the Path.

Contrary to this situation, when Krishnamurti declared that 'Truth is a Pathless Land', what he meant was that he did not know what the Truth is, as he did not disclose any Truth and named it as 'Unknown', and therefore, there is no Path to find it.

Understanding Godwin by understanding Krishnamurti.

For Krishnamurti this did not happen, as his mind did not function in a complete way. There was a Gap or Gaps. It would have been a Cognition gap or added to this a Sensation gap as well.

If there is a Cognition Gap, then the correct Memory would not arise and is not compared with the Cognition, as there was no Cognition, to Think (Perceive) correctly. When an erroneous thinking happens, one would somehow feel it and, it would generate Fear, insecurity, doubt, etc., instead of the Awareness of the object. This was what was happening to Krishnamurti.

Without being able to overcome the situation, Krishnamurti waited for so long, and in one day something strange happened to him. Added to this gap in his Fragmented mind, another gap started to take place, for the first time and henceforth from time to time. The new Gap is the Thinking itself, a 'Thinking Gap'. Since the 'Thinking' became absent, there was no fear, doubt, insecurity generated by the thinking. And the 'Absence of Thinking', as a gap in the mind, therefore, resulted in an Awareness. Awareness of What? An Awareness of 'Thoughtlessness'.

But Krishnamurti came to a wrong conclusion. That is, by one being Aware of the fear, insecurity, doubt, etc., then that Awareness would help to give rise to the 'Thoughtlessness' in him, he concluded. Which is a wrong judgment by Krishnamurti. Why?

'Thoughtlessness' had arisen in him due to the new gap in his mind, increasing the Fragmentation as well. The New Gap being the 'Thinking Gap'. Where now he cant even think, even if he tries. This situation is well explained by Krishnamurti himself, in his Diary and in many other places. But at this situation, after experiencing the 'Thoughtlessness', Krishnamurti becomes Aware of the 'Thoughtlessness', but puts the Awareness before the 'Thoughtlessness' and concludes that the reason for the 'Thoughtlessness' as the Awareness, i.e. Awareness of fear, doubt, insecurity, etc.

Krishnamurti, from this experience, assumed that all are having Fragmented Minds, and they therefore fear, doubt, feel insecure, etc., and erroneously suggests to them to be Aware of these states and to experience the Thoughtlessness, which may happen only if one is without having any expectation, to experience the 'Thoughtlessness'. Therefore, the 'Thoughtlessness' as the Unknown, as the Truth, does not have a Path, he concludes. It should happen if One is 'Aware' of one's Fear, insecurity, doubt, etc. But when one is in Fear, insecurity, doubt, etc., then mind cannot become Aware of them, but instead would become Attentive to them constantly observing them, in perpetuation, increasing the Fear, insecurity, doubt, etc.

Understanding Godwin by understanding Krishnamurti.

So what is this problem Krishnamurti had, and how others who have the same problem understand or identity with Krishnamurti. Is there a solution to this problem?

The problem Krishnamurti had is known as Schizophrenia. The symptoms of this Schizophrenia is explained well by neuron-scientists. All these symptoms we can find in Krishnamurti.

When Krishnamurti continually suffered from this Schizophrenia, people around him thought that he is undergoing some spiritual change. This 'wired' thinking shows what type of people who were around him, expecting Teaching from this sick person.

Was he diagnosed with Schizophrenia?

When Krishnamurti was young, Schizophrenia was not known to the field of medicine. When he was middle age and old, his condition was recognized as a spiritual 'Process' by his followers, with amazement, veneration and with mysticism, and they called the situation of this sickness as 'The Process' with a definite article of 'The'. Please read all the symptoms of schizophrenia, in the INTERNET, and then read K's Diary, to diagnose the symptoms present in Krishnamurti.

Krishnamurti suffered from this Schizophrenia, or from this 'The process' until his death, as there was no cure, even if they sought such a cure.

The experiencing the effect of Schizophrenia, within and understanding it to a certain extent, formed the central or Core Teaching of Krishnamurti. Everything else in his Teaching amounted to Krishnamurti's attempt to understand the outside world using this inner experience of Fragmented mind caused by Schizophrenia. Hence, all these explanations of his, relating to outside world becomes a 'non-sense'.

Understanding Awareness.

Jiddu Krishnamurti speaks of Awareness as his central theme for solving his problem of suffering, caused by fear, insecurity, doubt, etc. These fear, insecurity, doubt, etc., which are caused by the Fragmented nature of his mind, creating a 'division' within, when he 'thinks'. Therefore, this Fragmented thinking does not generate an Awareness, of the object one thinks of, as in a Healthy person, having a healthy non-fragmented mind.

Is Awareness is a solution to the Problem or an outcome when the problem is no more?

When one 'observes' an object, through any of the six senses, then Mind start to function. Each component of the Mind's functions are themselves are an action. These actions of the Mind's Functions is done one after the other as follows:-

Sensation of the Object -> then Cognition of the Object -> then Memory of an earlier similar Object -> then the Thinking (perceiving) of the Object as a known one or new one.

This Thinking (Perceiving), which is the last action of the function of the Mind, which give rise to the Awareness of the Object, where Awareness is a mental state.

When one is Aware of an object, there is a distance between the Object observed, and the Awareness. The distance being the Mind Function involving, Sensation -> Cognition -> Memory -> Thinking (Perception).

This Awareness is the final out come of the Function of the Mind, if the Mind is Healthy one and therefore functions in it's complete way.

The Confusion of Awareness.

Having had the experience of 'Sati', but using the word of Awareness to discuss the same with others, who did not have any idea of 'Sati', but some others discussing using the word 'Awareness' to only mean 'Awareness', led to a great confusion in me, which I tried to understand and could not. Hence, I naturally concluded that these people are wrong in their opinion and ideas. So I did not give any value or did not try to understand why they were wrong, as there were no way to find out such a thing. Also they were not able to clearly express them as well, with respect to the meaning of Awareness.

Then after  long time I came across a Krishnamurti Forum, and joined to learn more. Through that I gradually learned what Krishnamurti was teaching and his central teaching was about 'Awareness'. Since, Krishnamurti was discussing Awareness with examples, I was able to grasp the meaning of it.

This led to the Understanding of Jiddu Krishnamurti, which enable me to understand Godwin, Adikaram, etc.

Understanding of Jiddu Krishnamurti.

Many and many people who follow Krishnamurti never understand him. Hence they claim that it is difficult to understand Krishnamurti. Yet, there are a few who understand him, more correctly identify with him, but cannot clearly put forward or explain what it is. But they follow him eagerly as they have benefited by his teaching.

How they have benefited?

Krishnamurti had a problem of suffering. It was caused by the fear, insecurity, doubt, etc. These were in turn was caused by the Thinking. Thinking which happens to Krishnamurti, he feels as 'Not my thinking' or he feels that, "I am not thinking", but only as 'Thinking happening' on its own to him, therefore he terms the 'Thinking' as 'Not Me', while identifying him separate from thinking as 'Me'. This he called as the Fragmentation of the Mind. This situation he explains using many other terms as well, as he was trying to convey his experience of the Fragmentation, to his listeners. But many did not understand, as many of them don't have fragmented Minds. But there were a few, who had and have fragmented minds as Krishnamurti, and they understand or at least identify with the problem Krishnamurti explains. This understanding of Krishnamurti's Teaching have reduced their suffering to some extent.

Understanding Godwin by understanding Krishnamurti.

Godwin was teaching, how to practice 'Awareness', when I went to Nilambe Meditation Center for the first time. He also taught Loving Kindness of Buddhism. Sometime he used to Discuss how to practice the Awareness on Breathing as well. (though Godwin used the word Awareness here, it was wrong. The correct usage should be Attention on Breathing, which Godwin did not know.) But his main focus was on the Awareness, just Awareness. Aware of what? Aware of whatever happening in the Mind, and without. This he called as 'Vipassana Bhavana', hence in many instances the center was known as a Vipassana Meditation Center as well.

But the Center was labeled as a non-sectarian one, as he allowed anyone to practice, whatever they know and practice. Why did Godwin allow as such? Because he wanted every practitioner to come and practice, and he also tried to teach, many techniques though he did not practice them, but taught from book knowledge.

This Practice of Awareness is of essentially of Krishnamurti's Teaching, which was the Godwin's main source of instructions. Nilambe Library was complete almost with all of the Krishnamurti's book as well as that of E.W. Adikaram's books, who is the great Sri Lankan follower of Krishnamurti, who had established a Krishnamurti Foundation in Sri Lanka.

I have already practiced pure Buddhist practice of 'Aanapana Sati' to have all the stages of Samadi. And continued to Practice Vipassana Bhavana, and had insights, when I came to Nilambe for the first time.

At this time I was not well versed in Pali or equivalent Buddhist terms in English. Also I found later many of them here at the center were not well versed with the same either. This led to a great deal of confusion in discussions, and even many were not able to acknowledge the reason for the confusion, as being these terminology.

The most important confusion was centered around the word 'Awareness', which no one seem to be aware.

Hence, I assumed that it to be 'Sati' or Attention (Manasikaraya), which these Krishnamurti follower of Godwin was using, as well as so many others who were following the same as Godwin. But Adikaram translated this word of 'Awareness' into Sinhala as 'Sihiya' or 'Awadiya' or 'Awadimathbava' (simple wakeful state), which are more correct. But here in the meditation center, Godwin and others also have taken the meaning of Awareness to be that of 'Sati', without experiencing the 'Sati', as they have never experienced Samadi or practiced for it, thus adding to the confusion.

The Guidance.

The instructions at Nilambe by late Godwin or present Upul, as they indicate, consists of Buddhist Vipassana Bhavana. But in actuality, it is Awareness of Jiddu Krishnamurti. And there is no practice as such of the Awareness. The awareness one has, has to be directed at the mind to discover the thoughts, emotions, feelings, etc., to find out how the suffering arise from them.  So the emphasis is to discover what is there. This, Godwin used to say, "let us discover how thoughts arise. Does not it arise automatically?"

It is only about thoughts, they speak about. So Godwin says,

'' Are the thoughts mostly about the past? Are they mostly about the future? Are the thoughts racing one after another? Are they slowing down? Is there space between two thoughts? Do you get involved in some thoughts? Do you judge your thoughts? Make your own discoveries about the different aspects, about the different dimensions, about the structure of your thoughts ''  - Godwin Samararathne

But there will not be any attempt to put away thoughts, and to discover how to put away. So there is no idea given as such of Samadi, thoughtless state. For them, Godwin and Upul, it is only a Buddhist scriptures, which says about Samadi. Those were later additions by monks. What Buddha did was, 'Choice-less Awareness' as the Buddha could not put away Anger, Desire, Lust and Ignorance, when those thoughts arose in Lord Buddha, he just watched them, without giving into them.

If Godwin and Upul cannot come the this 'Hypothetical' Samadi, which was invented by later monks, according to them, how can Lord Buddha can do it? Was not Lord Buddha a just a human being like, Godwin, Upul and like us? This is the idea, they put forward to say, that Lord Buddha was practising only, Choice-less Awareness.

I know that thoughts can be put away and can come to Samadi, since I did it. With that experience I can imagine the depth of the Samadi, Lord Buddha had achieved, which is described in the scriptures.

But the surprising thing, which crossed my mind is, about Godwin, Upul and such other people, who practice 'Choice-less Awareness', sitting cross legged, with closed eyes, which Krishanmurit never approved, but watching the thoughts of Lust, anger, desire, etc., and imagining that they are not getting involved in them. But for them the understanding has never dawned, it is thinking, an act by themselves, hence a pure indulgence.

When a prospective meditator comes to Nilambe, for the practice, having in his mind to get instructions on Bhavana, but the instructions given is, this Choice-less Awareness. How do they do this? It is long questioning and answering session, in which, it is emphasised, that Bhavana cannot solve one's problem, but only the Choice-less Awareness can do it. It is the real Vipassana Bhavana, they name. Hence, the name of the centre goes as Nilambe Buddhist Meditation Centre. Where the real Buddhism, which was rediscovered by Krishnamurti is taught.

How does this questioning and answering session begin? with a prospective Bhavana yogi?

Godwin or Upul   - What made you to decide to do Bhavana?

Prospector of B.  - I have many problems which is causing a lot of suffering.

Godwin or Upul  - Then what did you do?

Prospector of B.  - I tried to do Bhavana. But it was from reading a book. I
improved a little. But I  faced some problems for which I
could not find any answer in that book.

Godwin or Upul  - So, you tried to get your mind focused on the breathing? You
tried to get at the Samadi?

Prospector of B.  - Yes.

Godwin or Upul  - Don't you think, if you cannot get at Samadi, it will also add to
                              your suffering?

Prospector of B.  - Yes, I think so. But should not I try?

Godwin or Upul  - What you should try is to understand your present problems.
When you understand them, there will be peace. What is
                              needed is peace, not Samadi.

Prospector of B.  - Then what should I do?

Godwin or Upul  - Just be Aware of everything that happens in the mind, and
discover all that is taking place. Don't try to do anything.
When you understand the things, which are happening in the
mind, there will be peace. This is Choice-less Awareness,
which is the real Vipassana Bhavana and it is better than
                              Samadi Bhavana.

All these made me to try to understand Jiddu Krishnamurti, and since I have understood what Jiddu Krishnamurti was talking about and why, I have another blog to discuss the same. The link to that blog you will find at the end of this post, which is named as Understanding Jiddu Krishnamurti. I knew If I understand Jiddu Krishnamurti, I will be able to understand Adikaram and  Godwin.
