The instructions at Nilambe by late Godwin or present Upul, as they indicate, consists of Buddhist Vipassana Bhavana. But in actuality, it is Awareness of Jiddu Krishnamurti. And there is no practice as such of the Awareness. The awareness one has, has to be directed at the mind to discover the thoughts, emotions, feelings, etc., to find out how the suffering arise from them. So the emphasis is to discover what is there. This, Godwin used to say, "let us discover how thoughts arise. Does not it arise automatically?"
It is only about thoughts, they speak about. So Godwin says,
'' Are the thoughts mostly about the past? Are
they mostly about the future? Are the thoughts racing one after another?
Are they slowing down? Is there space between two thoughts? Do you get
involved in some thoughts? Do you judge your thoughts? Make your own
discoveries about the different aspects, about the different dimensions,
about the structure of your thoughts '' - Godwin Samararathne
But there will not be any attempt to put away thoughts, and to discover how to put away. So there is no idea given as such of Samadi, thoughtless state. For them, Godwin and Upul, it is only a Buddhist scriptures, which says about Samadi. Those were later additions by monks. What Buddha did was, 'Choice-less Awareness' as the Buddha could not put away Anger, Desire, Lust and Ignorance, when those thoughts arose in Lord Buddha, he just watched them, without giving into them.
If Godwin and Upul cannot come the this 'Hypothetical' Samadi, which was invented by later monks, according to them, how can Lord Buddha can do it? Was not Lord Buddha a just a human being like, Godwin, Upul and like us? This is the idea, they put forward to say, that Lord Buddha was practising only, Choice-less Awareness.
I know that thoughts can be put away and can come to Samadi, since I did it. With that experience I can imagine the depth of the Samadi, Lord Buddha had achieved, which is described in the scriptures.
But the surprising thing, which crossed my mind is, about Godwin, Upul and such other people, who practice 'Choice-less Awareness', sitting cross legged, with closed eyes, which Krishanmurit never approved, but watching the thoughts of Lust, anger, desire, etc., and imagining that they are not getting involved in them. But for them the understanding has never dawned, it is thinking, an act by themselves, hence a pure indulgence.
When a prospective meditator comes to Nilambe, for the practice, having in his mind to get instructions on Bhavana, but the instructions given is, this Choice-less Awareness. How do they do this? It is long questioning and answering session, in which, it is emphasised, that Bhavana cannot solve one's problem, but only the Choice-less Awareness can do it. It is the real Vipassana Bhavana, they name. Hence, the name of the centre goes as Nilambe Buddhist Meditation Centre. Where the real Buddhism, which was rediscovered by Krishnamurti is taught.
How does this questioning and answering session begin? with a prospective Bhavana yogi?
Godwin or Upul - What made you to decide to do Bhavana?
Prospector of B. - I have many problems which is causing a lot of suffering.
Godwin or Upul - Then what did you do?
Prospector of B. - I tried to do Bhavana. But it was from reading a book. I
improved a little. But I faced some problems for which I
could not find any answer in that book.
Godwin or Upul - So, you tried to get your mind focused on the breathing? You
tried to get at the Samadi?
Prospector of B. - Yes.
Godwin or Upul - Don't you think, if you cannot get at Samadi, it will also add to
your suffering?
Prospector of B. - Yes, I think so. But should not I try?
Godwin or Upul - What you should try is to understand your present problems.
When you understand them, there will be peace. What is
needed is peace, not Samadi.
Prospector of B. - Then what should I do?
Godwin or Upul - Just be Aware of everything that happens in the mind, and
discover all that is taking place. Don't try to do anything.
When you understand the things, which are happening in the
mind, there will be peace. This is Choice-less Awareness,
which is the real Vipassana Bhavana and it is better than
Samadi Bhavana.

All these made me to try to understand Jiddu Krishnamurti, and since I have understood what Jiddu Krishnamurti was talking about and why, I have another blog to discuss the same. The link to that blog you will find at the end of this post, which is named as Understanding Jiddu Krishnamurti. I knew If I understand Jiddu Krishnamurti, I will be able to understand Adikaram and Godwin.
